Christmas Dinner/Dance was held at:
Dimitri's Restaurant
The Christmas Dinner was a great time for all, we had a great showing as 103 attended! The first 30 couples entering got handmade Christmas ornaments. RADM Smith started off the evening with a few words then it was on to dinner.
Over the course of the evening there were several raffles taking place. A raffle of several nautical prints from the old Akron NOSC raffled off, with the proceeds going to the Chief Petty Officer’s Scholarship fund. A total of $100 will be donated to that fund. Two bricks from the closed Cleveland NOSC were raffled off in spirited fashion (winners were LNC Brown & CAPT Spath). Much more fun was had. People got up and danced, socialized and had a rollicking good time. Great to see everyone.
There was a share the wealth raffle and winners were: Rob Erb for $42 who donated it back to the CPOA; Tod Swisher for $42 (new member); Patty Warnick for $63; Ron Carpenter for $63; Bob Hooven the big winner of the evening for $105.
Progressive raffle starts back this month and it’s $40.00, since Rob Erb wasn’t present in November! Legal Beagle is back this month, too, so get those thinking caps on.
Seems we have been remiss in our duties. A belated “Welcome Aboard!” to our newest Members over the last several months: ETCM(SS) Al Albergotti, LNC Monica Brown, OSC(SW) William Driver, HMC Weley Fellure, BMC Daniel Greene, ITC William Lane, FCCS(SW) Carl Munk, FCC(SW) Todd Swisher & HMC Charlotte Ward. Also a belated “Welcome Aboard!” to our newest Associate Members over the last several months: RADM Smith, CAPT Dillon, CAPT Burgund, & John Kickham.
Remember, your dues must be paid up and you must be present to win the progressive raffle.
Thanks to all who could attend. Your presence made it a success. It's always great to get together!
November:
Birthdays: CPOs: HTC Frank Carr; LSC Catherine Owen; MMC Robert Wolfe
Spouses: Cheryl Swisher
Wedding Anniversaries: Ron & Joanie Carpenter; CAPT Rick & Doris Dillon
CPOA sends warm thoughts and prayers to the following members or spouses as they recover from illness/sickness/surgeries: Frank Carr, Linda Gracie (Carr), Jeff Owen, Frank Sabo, Conrad Syroney, Mrs. JoAnne McCarthy,
Ray Clossin, Beth Murphy, Beverly Berry.
Rules are the same as they always have been:
1) First person with the most correct answers wins.
2) Duplicate prizes will not be awarded because there are none!
Decisions and answers of the Legal Beagle are final, since I do all the research.
January's Questions:
(get ready for general election year?):
1. What was the first war in which men served in the Navy and later went on to become President?
2. What was an electuary in the late 18th century?
3. How many men who later became President served in a branch of the U.S. military, including those who have served honorably as volunteers, in the reserve or state militia?
4. What was so controversial about the 1824 presidential election?
5. We have a pretty good idea of which President held the held the highest military rank (George Washington was General of the Armies of the United States and Dwight Eisenhower was General of the Army), but who held the lowest?

General Information
Remember DOD policy on elections
NAVADMIN 382/11 reiterates the Department of Defense policy on elections, uniforms, participation, etc. For those of you who may be very politically active, remember that a military uniform is NOT to be worn when supporting a candidate (only exceptions are those official color guards at events such as the convention openings); do not wear your uniform for your official campaign photos; you may refer to your membership in the Reserve (if still active) or as a retired service member the same way you would on any resume; for more, please read the message available on the NPS website under references/messages. If you have specific questions, there is a contact person listed, or you can call me and I’ll get the word from JAG for you.
Change to E 8/9 Selection Board message
NAVADMIN 387/11 of 19 December 2011 cancels NAVADMIN of 20 September 11. The guidance in it super cedes that of the earlier message. Due date for communication to the board for reserve E8 and 9 is 10 Feb 2012, for active E9 - 9 Mar and active E8 - 30 Mar. Good luck to all those hoping for selection!
VA Adds Ships to Agent Orange List
The Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA) announced in September that it has expanded its list of ships that served in areas of Vietnam that now qualify for disability compensation due to Agent Orange herbicide exposure. The list is available at www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/agentorange, or call the Special Issues Helpline at 1-800-749-8387 and press 3. If you served on any of these ships between 9 Jan 1962 and 7 May 1975, you may want to check it out.
OHIO BUREAU OF MOTOR VEHICLES
Your driver’s license can now show that you are/were a member of the military. An “Armed Forces” stamp on license or state ID provides veterans recognition, especially useful at stores that give discounts to military and require a photo ID. Some retailers are confused over active duty/reserve/retired cards, but having the status stamped on your Ohio driver’s license can clear up any confusion. Next time you renew your license, take in your military ID or DD-214 or DD-215, leave and earnings statement or copy of current orders. (Bob Pallat just did his this month and it was very easy, no charge, at the BMV).
